It's Xmas time! Went to "A Very Phoenix Xmas". It was well worth it. Just when you think you've seen creativity at it's best, The Fourth Wall takes creativity in a new, fresh direction. The sock monkeys were awesome, spiced up with some 'Gangnam'. The skits in general were clever and funny. The "War on Xmas" home invasion was hilarious. Plus an extra bonus is the Phoenix theatre itself. The audience is close, so there's natural interaction with the show's MC and sometimes the actors. The other block-buster Xmas shows are great in their own way, but it's so worth it to add "A Very Phoenix Xmas" to your Xmas experience.

Also saw "Maya, Illusions" last night. I almost passed up on the 9pm slot, but keep reading show descriptions until I saw the word "opera" in one (other than that I had no idea what the show was about from the description). It's at the Cook theatre which is ideal for this show. I've been wanting to see an opera and this was perfect: a mini-opera with a mini orchestra. The singing was TREMENDOUS, especially the main female character. Her voice is so pure. She had me spell-bound. The visual effects were also fascinating - her dress is a parachute, you have to see it to appreciate it. If you don't like opera to begin with, you probably won't like this; but if you like great visual effects and pure operatic voices, you won't be disappointed.

Last night saw Stewart Huff (Donating sperm...). This guy was hilarious. People were crying from laughing. I also liked his theme of being tolerant of other people and cultures, and take the time to "not be stupid". He has that southern accent that makes his style and presentation inherently funny to listen to. This guy is very polished and professional. A must see.

Just saw "And I am Not Making This Up". Fascinating show. Have never seen a show like that (which is what Fringe is about)! She takes you from laughter to seriousness, from being loud to dead silence, and performing interesting mime movements all at the same time. There's also improvisation going on which makes it unique and special. I think this is amazing theatre - one person, for one hour, one prop, comedy, mine, story-telling, improvisation - she's a treasure!

Thanks very much, Lisa, for the information about "Aquarium." I incorporated it into my original post. Break a leg this week!

Thanks, Robby for the background info about the Robby Method of fringe-ing! (laughing) I will try the Phil Method of Ordering some time, too.

And thank you, Rich, who I don't think I know in face-to-face life, for leaving another comment about the shows you and your wife have seen. I really appreciate your attention and contribution to my blog!

Happy fringe-ing, everyone.

Just saw "facebook me" (my wife's pick). I liked how multiple short acting segments were used to weave together various teenage life situations, some funny and some serious. There was never a dull moment. Since the actors were teenagers (living thru this in real life) I didn't think they were really acting, which made it real and thought-provoking - what more can you ask for. Highly recommended. The kids did a great job!

Thanks, Hope!

The Robby Slaughter method of Fringe-ing actually has its roots with my friend Phil from Texas, who has the "Phil method of Ordering" which he uses in restaurants. Phil refuses to look at a menu, and instead calmly explains to the waitstaff that he prefers to be "surprised." He says "I have no food allergies, and trust you to select something which is particularly good at this place. And I eat everything!"

In recent years, the Robby method of Fringe-ing has become more of the "follow his wife to the shows she wants to see, but still have no idea what's happening." But we still love being surprised by Fringe. And if you aren't enlightened by the unexpected, then why are you at a fringe theater festival?
