2008-2009 LINE-UP

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (musical)
Off-Broadway’s long-running hysterical horticultural hit, an affectionate spoof of 1950s sci-fi movies has become a household name. Seymour, a down-and-out skid row floral assistant in love with the dizzy blonde co-worker Audrey, finds his chance for success and romance when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon his “Audrey II” grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore that offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, eventually threatening everyone in sight. Based on the 1960 horror film by Roger Corman, the spicy rock-and-jazz score by the award-winning team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken features such numbers as “Suddenly Seymour”, “Feed Me” and the title song. “An exuberant delight. Leaves the audiences ravenous for more!”  – New York Times

GOLDA’S BALCONY (drama)
The rise of Golda Meir from impoverished Russian schoolgirl to American school teacher to Prime Minister of Israel is one of the most amazing stories of the 20th century. Tony Award-winning playwright William Gibson, author of The Miracle Worker, has created an engaging one-woman drama of war and peace. The complex multi-media show follows the trajectory of Meir’s life as an intriguing backdrop for a dramatic look at history, idealism and power. The play focuses on the events surrounding the 1973 Yom Kippur War when Israel is attacked by Egypt and Syria. Faced with a crisis that could in fact change world history, Golda Meir reflects on her past, her rise to international politics and the many difficult choices she made in both her political and private life. “Fascinating.”  – New York Times

THE WIZARD OF OZ (holiday musical)
Faithful to MGM’s popular movie, this all-new production of Civic’s signature holiday extravaganza brings the film to life in a wild and wonderful musical journey to that magical place where dreams come true. Dorothy, a wistful, little Kansas farm girl, gets caught up in a tornado and whisked off, far over the rainbow, to the marvelous Land of Oz. With the help of the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion,  she battles the Wicked Witch of the West while trying to reach the great and powerful Wizard in hopes that he can help her get back home. There are plenty of adventures along the way as Dorothy and her three faithful friends follow the yellow brick road in search of the heart, knowledge and courage they’ve always had. Featuring a large children’s chorus and an array of special effects, including a full-blown tornado, this is the musical favorite for all ages. “Take a child, a grandchild or just the child in you, but by all means, go.”  – Jersey Journal

ENCHANTED APRIL (comedy)
In this comical tale of love, hope, and rejuvenation, Lotty and Rose feel that 1920s London post World War I seems as gray and dreary as their tepid marriages. When the two frustrated wives discover a chance to rent an Italian villa for a month, they resolve to make their getaway without their unappreciative husbands. With the company of a proper mature Englishwoman and a beautiful, mysterious socialite, Lotty and Rose set out for a holiday that will change their worlds forever. There, in a sunlit chateau on a remote Italian island, the women reclaim their lives with friendship, tears, laughter and a renewed appreciation of their distant husbands. After some unexpected arrivals at the villa, the four may not be the only ones transformed during this enchanted April. “Blissfully enchanting.” – New York Post

WEST SIDE STORY (musical)
The world’s greatest love story takes to the streets in this landmark Broadway musical with an unforgettable score and highly charged dance numbers. Shakespeare’s classic “Romeo and Juliet” is transported to modern-day New York City as two young idealistic lovers are caught between warring street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. American Tony and Puerto Rican Maria find love despite the explosive tensions between their families and friends. Their passionate romance grows while hostility mounts between the rival gangs. The young lovers, trapped on opposite sides of the turf war, struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice. Tony’s best friend Riff of the Jets and Maria’s brother Bernardo of the Sharks lead their respective gangs into a battle that ends in tragedy. “A major achievement of the American musical theatre.” – New York Times

TWENTIETH CENTURY (comedy)
All aboard the fast track to hilarity in the latest blast by Ken Ludwig, author of Lend Me a Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo and Leading Ladies. This hilarious adaptation of the 1934 screwball comedy is a riot on rails. Bankrupt, with his career on a downslide, egomaniacal Broadway director Oscar Jaffe boards the legendary Twentieth Century Limited and encounters his former discovery and ex-chorus girl Lily Garland, now a temperamental Hollywood star on the train from Chicago and New York. He’ll do anything to get her back under contract and back in his bed, but his former protégé will have nothing to do with him. Aided by his pushy manager Ida, his press secretary Owen and a Bible-thumping billionaire, Oscar pulls out all the stops in persuading her to return to Broadway in his upcoming show. “A thrilling funhouse ride.” – The New Yorker

I am very, very disappointed with this season. I can understanding trotting out the same old cliche musicals of Little Shop and WSS every once in a while, but seriously, both in the same season? And do we really need two “women discover themselves in adversity” plays in one season?

Why not put a known quantity in, but also a lesser known musical that deserves a wider audience? Follies? The Drowsy Chaperone? The Light in the Piazza? A Little Night Music? No, No Nanette? Kiss of the Spiderwoman?

I find that Buck Creek’s season is far more ambitious and interesting. The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Grey Gardens in one season? That is inspiration!

Thanks for reading and commenting, Chuck M.

I believe I will enjoy both Civic’s and Buck Creek’s seasons, but I get what you’re saying.

By the way, to whatever theatre staff might be reading this, I don’t have time to go looking for and cutting and pasting theatres’ seasons from their websites, but if someone from Buck Creek or any other area theatre wants to email me a tidy list, I would be happy to post it here.
