Thanks for the comment, Nate! I was going to email you my thanks, but the comment moderating software apparently deletes your email as soon as I post the comment! Grr.

Anyway, thanks for reading and commenting. I had been curious about Ray Cooney's other work.

I saw "Move Over Mrs. Markham" (also written by Ray Cooney) a few years ago and had the same reaction you did with this one. At times, I was laughing out loud, but a lot of the time I was struck by how often the author makes rather insulting, trite, and, frankly, unfunny "jokes" about gay people. I am not an uptight person that gets easily offended at off-color jokes, but at least have some level of wit or intelligence to your potentially offensive remarks.

I realize "times change" and perhaps... PERHAPS... these lines were not offensive to many in the 80's (even as I'm typing this I find myself changing my mind) but I believe true comedy transcends time, and Cooney's work never seems to sit well with me. Don't get me wrong, he can be funny... very funny... which makes it even more upsetting when he choses mean spirited jokes.

... or maybe it's just that I don't care much for farce...

"Love and Marriage" (by Sinatra) is the song that the play's author calls for at the top of the show. I agree that it is most familiar to my generation as the "Married . . . " theme song . . . but we're younger than a lot of B&B's audience. ;-)
